Playtest Time!

i did two playtests sessions. The first one was during class and I showed these two animations. I wrote down questions I wanted to ask the viewer such as "What is the intention of the pieces?, etc" From that initial playtest, I realized that I needed a better way to record the reactions and critiques of my fellow peers.

I did two playtests sessions. The first one was during class and I showed these two animations. I wrote down questions I wanted to ask the viewer such as "What is the intention of the pieces? What could I improve or change?"

From that initial playtest, these were the critiques I wrote down:

-They need an element to connect them.

- The Message isn't really clear.

- Adding audio might help tell the story better.

- Have the books come towards the viewer like the butterflies, to show similarity.

-Add more paintings so it's a series.

I knew that I wanted to use these suggestions to improve my "Falling Books" piece before my next playtest, so I decided to add audio, and change the visuals to match the story better.

Here is the updated "Falling Books" I showed to my 2nd round of play tests:

I wanted to create a better plan to playtest my project so I followed my professor's template:

More Progress...

I decided to focus on the 3D models this week. I made a whole new 3D model from scratch that is more realistic and easier to manipulate. I decided to add it to my scene. I wanted to create a out of the screen experience for the user. Like I've displayed in my video below.

Falling Books

This week I decided to take a step back from focusing on creating 3D elements and work on my 2nd animation, which I titled Falling Books. I wanted to do something more lighthearted and fun, but at the same time perfectly captures what I'm feeling at the moment, which is overwhelmed and stressed.

I decided to animate it as if she was trying to balance out the books, but yet they keep falling. I used After Effects.

Last week I realized that in my animations I would like to include both 2D and 3D elements as it gives the animations more depth. My plan of attack for the next few weeks is to focus on adding 3D elements to these animations and perfecting the animations as well. Here is my updated timeline:

Updated Timeline

Week 8: Continue editing the animations using After Effects.

Weeks 9-12: Create working 3D elements (using Blender) from the animation elements and add them to the 2D animations.

Week 13: Use Artivive to make the art pieces become augmented reality and add other elements like music, etc.

Week 14: Do the final touchups of the animations. Print out the art pieces as large posters.

Prototypes

This week is prototyping week. I decided to create 2 prototypes for one of the animated paintings, which I have decided to call "Scream Queen". I created this piece to show how even in rough times, beauty can come out it. With all the bad in the world, there is also some good.

The goal of my first prototype is to test how to use 3D elements on After Effects and how it will affect the mood of the animated painting. Here is the painting using only 2D elements:

First I used my photoshopped image of the butterfly and made it 3D on blender.

I then animated the butterfly on Blender, and exported it into as an .obj. I realized that the only way to export 3D files into after effects was with an external plugin called 3D element. I was able to export it into the project, but I had a hard time perfecting the butterfly. It has a black space above the antenna's. I exported it into my project and besides the problem, I did like how it looked 3D.

In my next prototype I wanted to test the interactivity and to do that I used Aero and Artivive. I liked using the artivive platform because it was easy to use and free. The user can download the free app and see the painting come to life. All I had to do was submit it to the Artivive website. You can also add 3D elements to it and music which I tested. I printed out the piece to test on the wall.

Volume up!

Updated Timeline

Week 6: Create the 3D elements on Blender. And start creating the animations in After Effects.

Weeks 7-10: Continue editing the animations using After Effects and Artivive.

Week 11-13: Use Artivive to make the art pieces become augmented reality and add other elements like music, etc.

Week 14: Do the final touchups of the animations. Print out the art pieces as large posters.

Project Timeline

Week 5: Decide what 2D and 3D elements to use for the art pieces, and decide what story I want to tell with each.

Week 6: Create the 3D elements on Blender. And start creating the animations in After Effects.

Weeks 7-10: Continue editing the animations using After Effects and Artvive.

Week 11-13: Use Aero to make the art pieces become augmented reality and design the QR codes.

Week 14: Do the final touchups of the animations. Print out the QR code and the art pieces as large posters.

$10.000 in 10 months :

If I was given $10,000 to develop my project in 10 months, I would make this project include at least 10 of my art pieces.

In the 1st - 2nd month: I will pick the art pieces and decide what 3D and 2D elements will be used and what is the proposed story for each piece. I will also book a gallery space to present the work.

In the 3rd - 5th month: I would focus on building all the 3D elements on Blender for the 10 pieces.

In the 6th - 9th month: I will focus on creating the animations in After Effects and making them interactive in Aero. I will also experiment with making the piece interactive with Aero.

In the 10 month: I will make sure to tie all loose ends, and print out all the paintings and QR codes to be placed in the gallery. I will also set up the paintings and make sure all the the animations work well, as well as user test the interactivity of the project.

$10 in 10 days:

If I was given $10 dollars to develop my project in 10 days, I would stick to focusing on one painting to perfect the animation and add 3D elements.

In the 1st-2nd day, I would decided what painting to choose and what elements to use. I would have to be more limited on the amount of elements that I use.

In the 3rd-4th day, I will focus on creating the blender elements.

In the 5th-9th day, I will focus on animating the painting to include those 2D and 3D elements using After Effects.

In the 10th day, I will print out a poster of the painting and the QR code. I will user test it the day before turning it in.

Project Description

My project goal is to create a Augmented Reality experience of my artworks to be placed in a gallery. I want to add 3D and 2D elements to the animation, and if possible I would love for it to be interactive.

My theme focuses on emotions of the art pieces and I want the audience to have their own individual experience with each art piece. I would like a completed 3 works of animated art as my goal.

Project Development Studio

I want to set my foot in the animation world. I decided to start from my core, and use my old paintings as the framework. I decided to repurpose these pieces, by adding an animation element.

I used a photograph of a butterfly and made it cartoon-like to match the aesthetic of the painting. I decided to make the butterflies become a part of the background.

I wanted to track the beginning image and have the butterflies fly out of her mouth and reach the background. I came in trouble with the animation part when the butterfly didn't look like it was flying out of the mouth. I made the inside of the mouth be a separate layer so it could look like it was coming out of her mouth. I decided to fade the rest of the butterflies, as I thought it'd be too much for the visual of it.
